CONTINUITY SHORT EXERCISE - RyanSkipper

Our group, consisting of Me, Mikey and Jonny, created a video about a drunk person having a convocation with mikey and edited it on premier cs6. We filmed the video as part of recognising continuity and how to maintain continuity.
My favourite part of the short was the close-up reaction shot of mikey which was cut into an eye-line match. The close up is filmed with a key light to highlight Mikeys expression. A close-up was used to really capture his hilarious reaction as close up reveal the subjects emotion and the audience cannot ignore it. Throughout the shot and on to the next one all maintain the continuity as, a fade or wipe would of looked cheesy and out of place, so a cut is used as the main idea is to not to get the audience to recognise the transitions.

My least favourite aspect of the video is the merge transition when i fell it was supposed to represent me getting knocked unconciouss but looking back it probably would of been better to fade to black and then fade from black into the frame of me on the floor. I didnt like it because it draws attention to the transition and cuts the fall short.

Throughout the video i think we maintained continuity as all shots fitted with the match on action like opening the door handle as the cuts showed the action to be relatively at the same time after transition. I also liked Mikey's eye-line match shot as with the cut i think it works well with his expressionist close up. Secondly i liked the music as i think the video really well. Apart from the Bleep sfx the levels from the non digetic soundtrack  and the digetic sound from the door slam or opening were maintained and kept in a decent balance.

The things that didnt go very well was the continuity when the title comes up. Unfortunately we didnt forsee or ecspect to get a reflection off the window of the doorand at the angle we filmed from, we made a massive error in the mise-en scene when Jonny the camera man and equiptment reflection could be seen. Also In the dialogue a swear word had to be bleeped out and it was hard to control the levels of sound between the speech and the non diagetic bleep, so the sound effect ended up being a little bit too loud, although it did mute the swear word. Next time i would sort the levels out so the the bleep and the digetic sounds are lowered together as we kept the video audio the same and turned the bleep sfx volume up.

In conclusion the video contained bother aspects of good and bad. If i was to do the project again i would definitely spend more time concidering shot angle and mise-en scene as by spending more time planning i could organise the shots alot better and use objects with meaning and hope concider reflective surfaces. Also i would make sure during editing i would try different transitions to see what fits best and also, when i use non digetic sound again i would make sure the levels work in harmony.

  1. Ryan, this is a fantastic first piece of writing. You demonstrate an understanding of terms and, although there is a little more scope for use of key terms, the terms you use are applied correctly. With this knowledge and comprehension under your hat, I expect you to attempt questions in class more often (although you do that well too!)
If you find the time, go back through this piece and fit in the missing terms, such as dissolve instead of merge etc. Very well done.
